Mrs. FT on steam, views and a great cookbook – and a competition!!!

Posted on

Mr. FT and I recently ventured to the North East of England to visit family and decided to stay over and we are so glad we did with the most fabulous stay at the Beamish Park Hotel

The last part of our drive to the hotel gave some incredible views of the local countryside. However Mr FT was drooling over a steam engine (whatever floats your boat as they say or in this case steam truck!) so he may have missed it.

It’s a little way out of the city centre but that’s no bad thing – take a deep breath and sigh at the view of the glorious countryside.

The hotel, which has been in the family for over 30 years, is modern but with an effortless charm, particularly it’s staff! Welcoming and warm, they obviously love what they do and it shows.   The breakfast, in the sunny dining room, was lovely with a great choice and nothing too much trouble.

We did not have dinner at the hotel as we had arranged to meet family at the Artisan restaurant at the Old Biscuit Factory in Central Newcastle – more on that later. But as we were leaving for the short taxi ride to Newcastle, I spied what looked like an amazing cook book in reception.  And it is an amazing cookbook – not only does it celebrate the hotel’s history, it also traces the culinary career of the son of the owners, now Head Chef Chris Walker .  I have already tried some recipes from it – the chocolate and pistachio brownies are deep and rich – very moreish.

Beautifully photographed and easy to follow, Mr FT and I felt we had to share this with you.  We have a copy to give as a prize – and it is so easy to win.  Just go onto www.favouritetables.com and tell us your favourite view at one of your favourite restaurants or share a picture on Twitter (@favouritetables).  Simple hey!   We don’t need a novel, just a few words that conjure up happy memories and great food!! Mr FT and I are all about sharing!

Las Iguanas – Newcastle

Posted on

Since my first visit in Summer 2012, Las Iguanas on Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne has quickly become one of my favourite places to go for a fantastic evening out.

The food is Latin American and ranges from the classic Fajitas and Burritos that you’d expect to see on the menu to more exotic dishes such as Henrique Rapadura (a spiced Lamb dish) – a personal favourite.

With fabulous decor – a mix of turquoise green, flamingo pink and Aztec bronze – one could be forgiven for thinking you were soaking up the atmosphere in Rio (especially after sampling their cocktail menu at Happy Hour!). There is always a great buzz and it’s the perfect place for a sophisticated date night or a more relaxed evening catching up with friends.

With a lot of pre and post Theatre Royal diners the restaurant is eternally busy so I’d always recommend booking a table in advance to avoid disappointment!
